“Safe and healthy” fireworks are legal in Gilroy, but with many important safety and fire safety restrictions. Gilroy is the only city in Santa Clara County that allows the sale and use of “safe and reasonable” fireworks. Fireworks purchased in Gilroy cannot be brought to other unincorporated cities or areas of Santa Clara County. A public fireworks display will be held on Wednesday, July 4, from approximately 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., on the gilroy High School baseball field at 10th grade and on Uvas Park Drive. In recent years, about 400 fireworks have been lit during a 20-minute demonstration. No “safe and healthy” personal fireworks can be unleashed at this location, city police said. City officials reminded the public this week that “safe and reasonable” fireworks can only be used from Sunday, July 1 to Wednesday, July 4 at midnight. “Safe and healthy” fireworks are approved by state firefighters and do not leave the ground or explode. All other fireworks are considered dangerous and illegal, officials warned, and their use is a violation of Gilroy state law and city regulations.
Only 16 community groups are licensed to sell authorized kiosks. On July 4, there will be police patrols to issue quotes for illegal purposes. Citizens are advised to call 408-846-0350 to report illegal fireworks. Fireworks can only be purchased and used by Gilroy residents, and buyers may be required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. For stalls that knowingly sell to people outside the city, the permit can be revoked and the booth can be closed. It is not legal to use these “safe and reasonable” fireworks in public spaces such as city parks, schools or in the parking lots of shopping malls. Firefighters advise that only adults should light fireworks, and only in front of their home, in their driveway or on the street in front of their home. In addition, all “safe and healthy” fireworks are banned in these hilly neighborhoods due to the high risk of fire: Country Estates II and III, including Mantelli, uphill Rancho Hills Drive, Carob, Columbine, Country, Banyan, Foxglove, Gunerra, Larkspur, Lavender, Hollyhock, Hoya, Mimosa, Olea, Periwinkle, Saffron, Stone Cress, Strawberry, Sunflower, Tea Tree and Wild Iris. Eagle Ridge Subdivision, including all sections of Eagle Ridge, including Creekside. Forest subdivision, including Rancho Real Drive, south (uphill) of its intersection with Welburn Avenue. Hecker Pass, west of Santa Teresa. Third Street, west of Santa Teresa, including all the Heartland Carriage Hills subdivisions west of Rancho Hills Drive, including Carriage, Colony, Crest Hill, Kestrel Dove and Valley Oaks (Rancho Hills Drive is good).

The Gilroy Police Department this week announced its partnership with FOREalert, a free smartphone app that enables instant, real-time communication with officers tasked with enforcing illegal fireworks. Citizens are encouraged to download this free app and use it to report illegal fireworks on July 4 between 6pm and midnight. The application is only monitored during this period. Citizens have the option to provide their contact details or remain completely anonymous, as no registration, login or contact details are required to use the application. The app can be downloaded from the App Store for iOS and Android devices. Location services must be enabled to use the FOREalert app.
FOREalert uses the GPS of the devices to access the general location and altitude of the user. The app allows users to add information to help agents determine where the breach occurs. Reports via the app go directly to the fireworks team. Citizens can still report illegal fireworks using 911 for emergencies and 408-846-0350 for non-emergencies. The app is the preferred method for reporting fireworks, police said. Here are non-profit fireworks stalls in Gilroy that sell safe and healthy fireworks: (d) Water pressure type fire extinguishers must be installed in such a way that no more than fifty (50) feet reach a firecracker. “We do it every year, we usually have two boxes of fireworks every year, sometimes a little more,” Riewerts said. Izayas Castillo, a Gilroy resident, says he buys a different fireworks display each year to keep things exciting for his kids. As the only city in Santa Clara County where people can use legal fireworks, he says it comes with responsibility.
(a) Buildings or parts of buildings used for the storage of safe and healthy fireworks shall be classified as occupying Group S of Division 1 in accordance with the Uniform Building Code, 1994 edition; Under no circumstances may buildings or parts of buildings that are not equipped with an automatic sprinkler system be used.
