In Iowa, resources and programs to provide free civil legal aid are limited. When you call a program to ask for help, your eligibility is verified. A client is eligible for assistance if their income and assets meet established guidelines and if the case aligns with the priorities established by the program. Iowa Legal Aid is a nonprofit organization that provides life-saving legal assistance to vulnerable, low-income Iowans who have nowhere else to go. Student interns work on matters handled by full-time faculty members and have primary responsibility for representing their clients at all stages of the court process, including interviews and counselling, negotiations, fact-finding, testimony, drafting and briefing, and courtroom appearances. MLS provides assistance in the following civil cases, but not limited to: dissolution of marriage, custody, child support claims, paternity claims, family law matters, guardianship or curatorship, unemployment claims, social security claims, landlord-tenant disputes, and consumer complaints. In addition to these civil cases, MLS assists defendants in court-appointed criminal offenses. MLS also assists children in need of help (CINA) or children accused of delinquent behaviour; Both types of these cases before the juvenile court. MLS partners with Family Resources to provide free representation in obtaining injunctions through a domestic violence support program. In addition, the MLS does not provide financial support to victims in divorce and custody proceedings, provided they are separated from the offender for a period of six months.
