The mū in our possession seems to be of medium size, about 15 inches (40 cm). Mū feed on sea snails, brittle stars and sea urchins on coral reefs from Hawaii west to East Asia and northern Australia, further into the Indian Ocean and Red Sea (Carpenter and Allen 1989). A young specimen has been spotted in Turkish waters, possibly en route through the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean (Bilecenoglu 2007).
